Bobi Wine supporter Otim Leon Joshua has gone to be with God, his life tragically cut short by NRM supporters who raided the streets of Gulu City under the protection of dictator Museveni’s military and police on the day Bobi Wine was campaigning in the region.
Hours before Bobi Wine’s arrival, thugs wearing NRM T-shirts stormed the city, looting businesses and beating anyone they came across in broad daylight, all in full view of the police and military. Among the victims was Leon, a 16-year-old student who was brutally beaten and rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, which he sadly succumbed to today.
Bobi Wine sent a condolence message to Leon’s relatives and friends. In his message shared on his Facebook page, he said:
“I am saddened by the death of 16-year-old student Joshua Leon Otim, who has today succumbed to the extensive injuries he sustained last Saturday when police and military officers, aided by gangs in plain clothes holding machetes and sticks, attacked and flogged us and our supporters as we attempted to campaign in Gulu City.”
Otim’s death underscores the ongoing complicity of the Electoral Commission and all other state institutions mandated to ensure a credible, free, and fair electoral process. We extend our sincere sympathies to his family and friends, and demand prompt justice for all those responsible for his death.
In the last campaign, tyrant Museveni oversaw the killing of more than 200 young people who protested the arrest of Bobi Wine in Luuka District in Eastern Uganda. As the current campaigns continue, killings, kidnaps, and abductions will likely become the order of the day since Museveni cannot allow free competition with his main challenger. Ugandans must realise that Museveni organises elections merely to project himself as a democrat, yet he is a serial tyrant. The sooner Ugandans understand this, the better.
