For a long time, we were told that BRICS is a strong force that can stand up to the West. A big alternative. A serious counterweight to the United States.
Well, Venezuela just tested that theory and the results were… silence.
When the U.S. reportedly attacked key targets in Venezuela and went after President Nicolás Maduro, many people waited to hear from BRICS. After all, this is the same group that loves talking about “sovereignty” and “standing together.”
No statement. No action. No emergency meeting. Just quiet.
For years, Venezuela depended on BRICS countries after the West shut its doors with sanctions. The country looked to Russia, China, and others for support, trade, and protection. BRICS leaders kept assuring the world that they had Venezuela’s back and that they were ready to resist U.S. pressure.
But when the pressure came, BRICS suddenly disappeared.
The U.S. did not wait for the UN. It did not negotiate. It did not seem worried about any reaction from BRICS capitals. And clearly, it had no reason to be.
This episode shows an uncomfortable truth: BRICS talks big, but acts small. It is good at speeches and statements, but not much else. It is an economic club, not a security force, and it has no real power to stop U.S. military action.
For countries like South Africa, which often present BRICS as a strong alternative to the West, Venezuela’s case should be a warning. BRICS may offer friendly words and photo opportunities, but when things get serious, you are on your own.
So the big question is simple: if BRICS could not help Venezuela, who exactly will it help?
For critics, this only confirms what they already believed BRICS is not a real challenge to Western power. It is more of a talking shop, united by complaints, but lacking the muscle to do anything about them.
Venezuela’s situation has made one thing clear: BRICS looks powerful on paper, but in real life, it seems to vanish when it matters most. BRICS is really a dormant bloc.
