NUP presidential candidate H.E. Bobi Wine spent the day in Masaka City canvassing for votes as he seeks to become the 10th President of Uganda. In Masaka, the Kabaka’s city, the musician-turned-politician, elegantly dressed in a kanzu (traditional Kiganda attire), was welcomed like a hero. It is estimated that over 500,000 people thronged the streets to receive him, with some standing along the roadsides waving and chanting his name as others ran alongside his car.

Given Masaka’s strong cultural attachment to the Kabaka of Buganda, Kyagulanyi was ushered onto the stage with his song Nyimbira Kabaka Wange. His message centred on a new Uganda one that delivers justice for all regardless of tribe. He promised to restore justice, revive the defunct Uganda Railway, build and stock hospitals with adequate medicines and equipments, and construct quality schools that will offer free universal education.

Kyagulanyi also pledged that under his leadership no Ugandan would be dehumanised by security agencies. He emphasised unity and the protection of the right to free speech, saying it is a God-given right. Addressing the crowd, he told the people of Masaka that they are the judges, and that 15th January will be their “Judgement Day.”

While standing in the middle of the massive crowd, Kyagulanyi presented NUP flag bearers and urged voters to choose only candidates with the umbrella symbol. He reminded them that during the last election he had endorsed certain individuals who later betrayed the cause, but encouraged them not to “cry over spilt milk,” saying NUP now has the best replacements.

In Nyendo–Mukungwe, he endorsed Ssebina Gyavira; for Masaka Woman MP, he endorsed Nalubowa; and in Kimanya–Kabonera, he endorsed Patrick Kutesa. “These are our party flag bearers. A vote for them is a vote for me,” he emphasised.

Kyagulanyi concluded his Masaka campaign in Kimanya–Kabonera, where thousands filled the area in a sea of red. His message remained consistent with what he had earlier delivered in Nyendo–Mukungwe. He will resume his presidential campaign on Monday, and according to the programme, he will be in Kyadondo East, the constituency that introduced him to politics.
