88.8 Mzansi Suid FM, founded by CEO McRouter, has become one of the most significant platforms for the Ugandan community in South Africa. McRouter explained that the initiative began in 2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic to assist and raise awareness among Ugandans who were experiencing severe difficulties, including food scarcity, unpaid rent, lack of medication, and

the pressing need for repatriation.

The platform, initially known as the Pietermaritzburg Community Platform, first concentrated on UgandanslivinginPietermaritzburg. However, due to the substantial interest and involvement from Ugandans nationwide, it was later renamed 88.8 Mzansi Suid FM.

According to its constitution, a 10-member executive committee, drawn from various provinces, manages the platform’s activities. The constitution outlines that in emergencies, such as legal issues, Mzansi Suid FM operates as a non-political and non-partisan platform. Its sole purpose, he stated, is to uplift, unite, and empower Ugandans residing in South Africa.

the loss of a loved one, or the repatriation of a body, members unite and each contribute a minimum of R100. It was emphasized that there are no monthly contributions and that joining is completely free; support is only requested when a qualified member has a legitimate need.

McRouter stressed that 88.8 The platform maintains a beloved tradition, the Annual Easter WATO WATO, which is hosted in a different province each year. The most recent event took place at the East London ICC, where members reportedly celebrated their shared heritage, enjoyed complimentary meals and sports, and proudly presented their talents and businesses.

With more than 900 active members, 88.8 Mzansi Suid FM continues to expand in both strength and unity. It serves as a potent emblem of Ugandan solidarity in the diaspora, and McRouter encouraged all Ugandans in South Africa to collaborate and support each other through all successes and challenges.
