Kampala — The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, has accused Parliamentary Commissioners of secretly awarding themselves an additional UGX 400 million each in what he described as another “dubious service award.”
Super Mp, Ssenyonyi made the allegations this week, saying the decision lacked transparency and accountability. He argued that such actions undermine public trust in Parliament, especially at a time when Ugandans are grappling with economic hardship.
“It is unacceptable for commissioners to continue rewarding themselves with taxpayers’ money under unclear circumstances. Parliament must operate with integrity and openness,” Ssenyonyi stated.
However, Parliament’s Spokesperson, Mr. Chris Obore, swiftly dismissed the claims, calling them “false, misleading, and politically motivated.” Obore maintained that all financial allocations within Parliament are made in accordance with established procedures and subject to oversight by the appropriate authorities.
“There is no secret allocation or irregular payment. The Leader of Opposition’s allegations are intended to create unnecessary controversy,” Obore said.
The renewed dispute has reignited public debate on the management of Parliament’s finances, coming only months after a similar scandal over “service awards” drew widespread criticism and calls for reform.
Political analysts warn that the controversy could deepen tensions between the opposition and the parliamentary administration, with growing calls for an independent audit to ensure greater transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds.
